Adult Overbite ReconstructionFull Mouth Bite Occlusion MakeoversConditions of overbite and underbite are commonly treated during our earlier years, typically as soon as the condition is diagnosed and we become candidates for treatment (certain developmental milestones have been reached).Traditional orthodontic treatment is a popular and effective treatment most of us will undergo during our pre teen and early adult years to correct basic alignment and faulty bite relationships. The use of Ortho retainers for many patients will become part of life. Unanticipated Bite ChangesSome adult patients have experienced the re-emergence of orthodontic problems despite having successful treatements during early years. One common factor of having a new need for retreatment is retainer failure, or simply the non-use of a retainer appliance due to poor fit or discomfort.
Our patient had a growing history of adult overbite and was becoming more and more conscious of how his teeth appeared when smiling. Originally from the United Kingdom (UK) and now a resident of the Cayman Islands, our patient was seeking treatment that would involve the use of premium veneer products that would create the orthodontic and bite changes he wanted without a long term commitment to traditional braces. Tooth crowding was also a significant issue which accelerated the overbite characteristics of his occlusion and cosmetic appearance of his smile. Unable to find Cayman Island doctors to provide the visual documentation of successful multi-unit veneer treatment plans (photos of successful cases) he required, the patient relied on the availability of veneer specialists on the South Florida coastline. Articulation Studies: Occlusal AnalysisDr. Pohl evaluated the patient with articulation studies and diagnostic waxup models. The technical data generated from occlusal analysis, in combination with the cosmetic characteristics the patient desired for his smile formed the basis for how a balanced use of premium porcelain crown and veneer products would be fabricated on a tooth by tooth basis.
Occlusal - Overbite Porcelain ReconstructionExtensive diagnostic wax up modeling (as a part of the occlusal studies) was used by Dr. Pohl and the patient to create the cosmetic result the patient was seeking while simultaneously assuring Dr. Pohl's goal of correcting the overbite condition that would normalize the patient's bite and relieve the concerns about malocclusion ruining his new restorations.Davinci Porcelain Veneers would provide the overall cosmetic makeover outcome he was seeking. As a result of the articulation studies conducted, it was determined that a total of 6 porcelain crowns would be needed to create occlusal function he hadn't had for years.
The wax-up models provided the veneer temporaries that enabled the patient to make his final selection of coloration, sizing and type of smile line he wanted for his makeover result. At the same time, Dr. Pohl was evaluating the technical data needed to assure the fabrication of restorative components that were critical for optimizing the patient's bite. The Benefits of Extra Attention to Detail and Analysis
Veneer failures are rarely a problem of product failure... but rather of a failure in technique or application. As can be seen in the adjacent post treatment photos... the cosmetic and orthodontic change created is quite obvious. All of the teeth seem to be in perfect symmetry. A total of 12 Davinci veneers provided the look and feel of natural teeth. Both upper and lower arches (maxillary and mandibular) now share normal occusal relationships. The fear of restorations of failing due to an overbite or other occlusal disturbance has been effectively overcome. With good oral hygiene habits and preventive care, years and years of endurance can be expected. The final outcome of treatment exceeded the patient's expectations. He has a smile filled with great looking teeth and now has a smile line (LVI Rule of Golden Proportions: curvature of biting edges of upper teeth follow the arch of the lower lip during smile behaviors) that he had never had.
